Randomized factorial design was implemented in four replications to determine optimal methods of Ajwain (Carum capticum) standard seeds germination. Ajwain seeds were placed top and between paper and sand exposed to two potassium nitrate (two grams per 1000 ml distilled water) and pre-chilling (seven days under 7-10ºC) pre-treatments which were under six temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 20-30, and 35ºC) in germinator for 25 days so as to germination indices were assessed. Ajwain seeds viability was estimated 75% after tetrazolium test. The highest final and normal seedling percentages were found under 15 and 20ºC in pre-chilling treatment and also 20ºC in potassium nitrate and control. No germination was observed under 35ºC in potassium nitrate and control, however, pre-chilling led to >26% germination. The higher germination potential was shown in top and between papers compared with sand. The lowest germination rate was recorded in control and potassium nitrate and the highest one in pre-chilling. The maximum of seedling weight vigor was suggested in top and between paper when seeds were put under 10, 15, and 20ºC. In order to evaluate optimal standard germination of Ajwain seeds, it was resulted that applying of two potassium nitrate and pre-chilling treatments placed top and between papers under 15 and 20ºC caused maximum of germination potential and seedling weight vigor.

Centaurea balsamita is an annual plant that invades fallow and steep lands. . In this regard, in order to evaluate the effect of intermittent temperatures on germination of Centaurea balsamita, a completely randomized design with six replications in vitro was conducted in the Faculty of Agriculture, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. Temperature treatments were alternating day / night 15-5, 5-20, 20-10, 25-10, 25-15 and C° 30-15. The results showed that intermittent night and day temperatures showed the highest germination rate at 5-15 °C. The highest percentage and rate of germination (83% and 8.9 seeds/day) were in the intermittent temperature of 5-15 °C and the lowest in the intermittent temperature of 15-30 °C. The highest values of root length (97 mm), shoot length (30 mm), root fresh weight (19 mg) and shoot fresh weight (52 mg) were obtained at 15-30, 5-15 °C, respectively. Also, the highest value of the seedling vigor index (7.75) was related to the temperature treatment of 5-15 °C, its lowest value (5.2) at an intermittent temperature of 10-25 °C. Also, the results of this experiment were in agreement with the reality of the germination of this plant (germination in November with moisture condition). Based on the results of the present study considering that November is the peak time for the emergence of this weed in Mashhad, it is suggested that in order to perform better control and reduce the use of pesticides and consequently reduce financial and environmental costs, chemical control this weed is done at this time.

In this research effect of priming types was investigated on the activity of antioxidant enzymes including Catalase (CAT), Ascorbate peroxidase (APX), Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Malone dialdehyde (MDA) and Gluthation reductase (Gred) in hybrid maize single cross 704 under drought stress. Treatments were drought at 4 levels (0, -3, -6 and -9 bar) and priming (Hormone, hydro, osmo, ascorbic and control). Germination percentage, seedling vigor and the activity of antioxidant enzymes were measured. Results showed that interaction of drought and priming was significant an all traits except of germination percentage. The highest seedling vigor (15.996) obtained from control condition. The highest CAT activity (35 μmol min-1 mg-1) observed in ascorbic acid priming at -9 bar drought stress. Also, the highest APX activity was related to hormone priming and -9 bar. While the lowest activity observed in control drought and osmo-priming. The highest amount of MDA achieved in -9 bar and control priming. The highest SOD activity observed in -9 bar. The highest Gred activity obtained by ascorbic acid priming at -9 bar.
